Biography
Dr. Pong graduated from the State University of New York at Buffalo in 1994, with a Ph.D. degree in Civil Engineering, specializing in Structural/Earthquake Engineering. Dr. Pong is a licensed Professional Engineer in California. He worked for a structural engineering consulting firm, SDE, before he joined San Francisco State University in 1998. He served as the Director of the School of Engineering from the Fall 2008 to the Spring 2018, was Civil Engineering Program Head from 2007-2008 and Graduate Coordinator from 2001-2007. He led two successful ABET accreditation visits in 2011 and 2017, respectively. Over the years, Dr. Pong has received substantial grants to provide opportunities for engineering students to succeed academically. He has received over $3.5 million in funding from the NSF, Department of Education, NASA and private companies. His most recent a $1M National Science Foundation (NSF) Hispanic-Serving Institute (HSI) Improving Undergraduate STEM Education (IUSE) grant (NSF Award ID 2122176) was to pursue the strengthening of student motivation and resilience through research and advising. Dr. Pong's research interests include but are not limited to Earthquake Engineering, Engineering Education, Structural Control, and Seismic Structural Design.
