Brief Description of Duties 


  • Support project managers and senior project staff to produce high quality work products for our water and wastewater clients. As such, tasks may include performing engineering calculations, preparing detailed design drawings and specifications, preparing planning and technical engineering reports, hydraulic modeling, research, data entry, and designing pipelines, pump stations, treatment processes and chemical feed systems. 
  • Be a member of local and virtual teams delivering challenging engineering projects. 
  • Perform site visits and field investigations, as necessary. 
  • Gain exposure to a variety of new and innovative technologies, treatment approaches, and design tools. 
  • Develop your professional network within the water industry through interactions with clients, regulatory agencies, other consulting firms, and industry organizations. 
  • Work with our seasoned business developers to learn how to identify, pursue, and win new projects/work. Education and/or Job Requirements 
  • Thorough understanding of the fundamental concepts of civil or environmental engineering. 
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint). Knowledge of AutoCAD and/or Microstation, GIS, BIM, and/or other design tools preferred. 
  • Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills. 
  • Ability to multi-task, prioritize, and take direction. 
  • Ability to prepare complete, concise, and organized engineering calculations/analyses. 
  • Willingness to perform field work, as needed, within the greater San Francisco Bay Area and Sierra watersheds. Education and Experience 
  • BS degree in civil engineering, or related field, required. MS in civil/environmental engineering preferred. 
  • Engineer in Training (EIT) certification required. 
  • 0-2 years of experience in the planning and design of water, wastewater, stormwater management, or other water infrastructure. Relevant internships and work experience during school will be considered.

Work collaboratively with other staff and regulatory agencies. Provide written and verbal presentations to the public and Board members. Consistent with good customer service practices and the goals of the Water Boards’ Strategic Plan and the San Diego Water Board’s Practical Vision, the incumbent is expected to be courteous and provide timely responses to internal and external customers, to follow through on commitments, and to solicit and consider internal and external customer input when completing work assignments.

Maffei Structural Engineering is offering a 3-day externship program to introduce curious students to the field of structural engineering. Participants will go through a structured program of learning activities including presentations about the industry, real project work, Young Engineers’ meetings, and personal mentorship.
