Graduate Preview Week Event Agenda

Date: Wednesday, October 23, 2024

Location: Hybrid (In-Person at SEC 211 & Online via Zoom)

 

12:30 PM – 12:40 PM
Welcome and Introduction

  • Speaker: Kwok Teh, Director of School of Engineering; David Quintero, Hamid Shahnasser, Zhaoshuo Jiang, Graduate Program Coordinators
  • Overview of the event and SFSU's graduate programs
  • Importance of graduate research and community at SFSU
  • Overview of the day's agenda

 

12:40 PM – 1:15 PM
Faculty Research Presentations

  • Goal: To provide prospective students with a high-level overview of ongoing research in the School of Engineering
  • Format: Each faculty member gives a brief 5-minute presentation highlighting their research area, opportunities for graduate students, and resources available
  • Presenters:
  • Civil Engineering
  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Electrical Engineering and Computer Engineering
  • Q&A: 5-10 minutes after the presentations

 

1:15 PM – 1:30 PM
Graduate Student Panel & Testimonials

  • Panelists: Current graduate students from different engineering disciplines
  • Students share their experiences, ongoing research, and advice for prospective students
  • Q&A with prospective students (in-person and online)

 

1:30 PM – 2:00 PM
Lab Tour & Facility Showcase (In-Person Only)

  • Tour Guide: Faculty and/or Graduate Research Assistants
  • Visit research labs, design spaces, and engineering facilities
  • Hands-on demonstrations of equipment
  • Discussion of how graduate students are integrated into these research spaces
  • Optional: Student Engineering Design Spaces tour led by ESAB leaders

For Virtual Attendees:

  • A recorded video tour of the labs or a live Q&A session with lab personnel/faculty (if possible)

 

Additional Suggestions for the Event:

  1. Zoom Chat Moderation: Designate someone to moderate the Zoom chat, ensuring online attendees have their questions answered in real-time.
  2. Breakout Rooms: After the main session, offer virtual breakout rooms for prospective students to meet with faculty from specific disciplines (e.g., Civil, Mechanical, Electrical) for more in-depth discussions. We can also arrange for follow up meeting for potential students with faculty members. 
  3. Follow-up Materials: Send attendees the recorded sessions, presentations, and links to relevant resources (e.g., faculty research profiles, admissions information).
