ENGR 462 Failure Mechanics and Prevention

This 3-unit course is about "Failure Mechanisms" in engineering.

  • How things fail
  • Why things fail
  • How can we design for failure-resistance.

Some engineering failure examples that are more widely known include:

  • Titanic hitting an iceberg
  • Spaceshuttle Challenger explosion
  • The Tacoma Narrows Bridge collapsing
  • A bone fracture
  • Aloha Airline 243 - a section of the fuselage flew off in mid-air because of metal fatigue (image below). No passenger died. The pilots were superb in landing it safely. Here is one Youtube.
