Welcome to the official web site of the School of Engineering at San Francisco State University. Located in one of the most diverse, creative, and globally connected regions of our nation, SFSU has grown over the past 40 years to become a nationally and internationally renowned comprehensive public institution.
Graduate studies at SFSU provide students with diverse backgrounds and experiences access to a rigorous and focused graduate education in the academic and professional disciplines. Students are challenged by faculty who provide the mentorship and flexibility necessary to achieve the level of excellence to ensure that students make the connection between theory and practice in their chosen field of study. The University combines the excitement of living in an ethnically diverse, culturally rich cosmopolitan center of business and technology, with the challenges and rewards of studying with top-tier faculty in nationally recognized academic programs. This vibrant environment stimulates student creativity, achievement and talent.
As stated in its mission statement, the School’s mission is: "[t]o educate students from a diverse and multicultural population to become productive members of the engineering profession and society at large." The School of Engineering combines excellence in teaching theoretical principles and engineering design concepts with practical hands-on experience and the development of technical proficiency and communications skills.
The School offers a graduate degree of Master of Science in Engineering with two areas of specialty, Structural/Earthquake Engineering (SEE) and Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE). Currently, there are over sixty graduate students enrolled in these programs, which feature curriculum and schedules designed with the convenience of working engineers in mind. About 70% of the graduate engineering students are domestic students and about 30% of the students are female.
The faculty in the School of Engineering is highly regarded for its excellent academic qualifications and strong practical engineering experience. The orientation and specializations of the faculty are eclectic and wide-ranging, offering expertise in both basic research and design/applied research. In addition, the School is active in research and has been awarded in grants and contracts from sources including the US Department of Energy, National Science Foundation, Air Force Research Laboratory, National Aeronautics and Space Administration, Pacific Gas & Electric, Agilent Technologies and Sun Microsystems. The San Francisco Bay Area, home of many innovative engineering and technology companies, provides an excellent regional setting and an abundant pool of desirable employment opportunities for our students.
The College of Science and Engineering at San Francisco State University has been selected as the graduate institutional site for the California State University LSAMP Master’s Bridge to the Doctorate (LSAMP-MBD) program supported by the National Science Foundation. This program’s primary objective is to enhance the preparation of qualified students for graduate study leading to the PhD in science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM). The school of engineering has some research and graduate teaching assistantships open occasionally. Additionally, the school of engineering seeks graduate students to be graders and tutors each semester.
Please visit San Francisco State University, Graduate Division Website where you can download the application and will learn all deadlines and status of the admission. If you have any further questions, please feel free to call me at 415 338-2124 or send email to me at hamid@sfsu.edu. Once again, thank you for your visiting of our web site. We look forward to meeting many great candidates like you in the coming semester.
