Features of the Program

Admission Requirements

University requirements:
  • a minimum GPA 3.0/4.0 for the last 60 units.
  • a minimum score of 550 on the paper-based test or 213 on the computer-based test in TOEFL for graduates from outside the U.S. Official TOEFL Test Score - must be sent directly by ETS using the Graduate Division's Institution Code - 4683.
  • Completed application forms should be sent to Graduate Division, San Francisco State University, 1600 Holloway Avenue, ADM 254, San Francisco, CA 94132.
Engineering requirements:
  • B.S. degree from an accredited engineering program.
  • minimum GPA of 3.0/4.0 in upper division major classes.
  • student can write a letter to University and ask a waiver from that and School of Engineering will take that into consideration.
  • two letters of recommendation from professors or supervisors and a statement of purpose should be sent directly to Graduate Coordinator, School of Engineering, San Francisco State University, 1600 Holloway Avenue, San Francisco, CA 94132.
  • Graduate Record Exam (GRE) scores within the last three years. Official GRE test score - must be sent directly by ETS using the Graduate Division's Institution Code - 4684.

* Graduates from non-engineering or non-major engineering programs may be admitted as conditional graduate students. Applicants must have a record well above the university admission requirements stated above and be able to clearly demonstrate their potential in engineering. Conditional graduate students may apply for advancement to classified graduate status after removing deficiencies in undergraduate engineering work. No conditional admissions are issued to international applicants. Technology degrees are not considered as engineering degrees.

Non-degree students may take courses through Extended Education. No admission process is needed for non-degree students.

University Bulletin/Class Schedule

The University Bulletin and/or class schedule may be purchased from the university bookstore. The Bulletin is usually available in university/college libraries in the form of microfiche.
